Do I Need Jet Ski Insurance?

Jet ski insurance is not a legal requirement for recreational use, but the financial and practical case for cover is compelling. Here is what every new buyer needs to know.

The question of whether jet ski insurance is legally required is one of the most common starting points for new personal watercraft buyers. The short answer is that jet ski insurance is not currently a legal requirement for recreational use in this country. Maritime law does not mandate that recreational watercraft carry insurance before they can be launched. However, the absence of a legal requirement is a long way from insurance being unnecessary — and understanding the practical reasons why riders choose to insure is important context for any new buyer.

The most immediate consequence of riding uninsured is direct personal financial exposure. A comprehensive jet ski policy typically provides cover for the craft itself, third-party liability, and recovery costs. The third-party liability component is the one that carries the most catastrophic potential cost. If your craft is involved in a collision that injures another person or damages another vessel, the claim against you can reach into the tens of thousands of dollars or higher. Without insurance, those costs fall directly on you. Third-party liability policies providing cover up to $10 million or more exist specifically because serious marine incidents can generate very large claims.

Damage to your own craft is the other major risk. Jet skis operate in environments where collisions with submerged objects, pier structures, floating debris, and other vessels are real possibilities. At $15,000 to $30,000 replacement cost for mid-to-high range models, the financial impact of writing off an uninsured craft can be severe. Unlike a car accident, where the risk can be partially shared with other road users through mandatory insurance frameworks, the jet ski rider carries the full cost of any self-inflicted damage without cover.

Beyond the pure financial calculation, there are practical situations where insurance is effectively required even without a legal mandate. Many marinas and boat ramps require evidence of third-party liability insurance before they will allow a craft to launch from their facility. Jet ski hire operations obviously require commercial cover as a condition of business. And if you have financed your craft through a loan or hire purchase agreement, the finance provider will almost certainly require the craft to be insured as a condition of the finance — the craft is their security, and they are not prepared to leave it unprotected.

Storage is another factor in the insurance decision. A craft stored in a shared marina or on a trailer in a suburban driveway is exposed to theft risk in a way that a craft locked in a private covered space is not. Theft of a well-maintained jet ski — particularly popular models like the Yamaha WaveRunner FX series or the Kawasaki Ultra — is a genuine risk, and the theft cover component of a comprehensive policy provides protection that many riders consider essential regardless of riding frequency.

The comparison with car insurance provides useful context. Motor vehicle insurance is mandatory for road use because the social costs of uninsured drivers are borne collectively. Personal watercraft insurance is not currently mandatory, but the logic of the underlying risk is similar. Most experienced riders, and most marine insurance professionals, regard third-party liability cover at minimum as a practical necessity rather than an optional extra. The relative affordability of a basic third-party liability policy — typically a small fraction of the cost of the craft itself — makes the decision straightforward for most owners.

If you are new to personal watercraft ownership and uncertain whether cover is appropriate for your situation, a brief conversation with a specialist marine insurance broker costs nothing and carries no obligation. They can explain the specific risks for your craft, your riding environment, and your storage arrangements, and help you make an informed decision about the level of cover that makes sense.
