Electric Jet Ski Insurance: What You Need to Know

Electric personal watercraft are a growing part of the market. Insurance for electric craft has some specific considerations that differ from petrol PWC cover.

Electric personal watercraft are no longer a novelty. Brands including Taiga, Narke, Lampuga, and others have established real products in the market, and the category is growing as battery technology improves range and performance. For buyers considering an electric jet ski, insurance involves some considerations that differ from conventional petrol-powered craft.

The most immediate practical difference is value. Current electric PWC sit at a significant price premium over equivalent petrol models — the technology, battery systems, and manufacturing volumes all contribute to higher retail prices than the market has historically been accustomed to. Insuring an electric craft for its correct replacement value is therefore particularly important, since the cost of a like-for-like replacement is higher than most riders might assume if they have only compared prices in the petrol market.

Battery systems are the core risk consideration that underwriters think about differently for electric craft. A high-capacity lithium-ion battery pack represents a large proportion of the craft's total value and is the component most likely to require replacement rather than repair if the craft is involved in a significant incident. The cost of a replacement battery pack can represent the majority of the craft's insured value, and policies that cover the craft comprehensively should extend to the battery system without specific exclusions.

Fire risk in lithium-ion battery systems is a known consideration in the broader electric vehicle market, and marine underwriters are increasingly familiar with this risk profile. A submersion incident — capsize in salt water — creates a specific risk of battery system damage and potentially delayed fire following recovery. These events are within the scope of comprehensive cover but should be understood as part of the risk profile of the craft you are insuring.

Charging infrastructure and shore power connections are not typically part of the craft policy, but any charger unit stored with the craft or in a trailer-mounted storage compartment should be listed under accessories cover if it is of significant value. Off-board charging equipment left at a storage location may need to be covered under a separate contents or property policy rather than the craft policy itself.

Range and operating environment considerations also matter. Current electric PWC have more limited range than petrol equivalents, and running low on battery in an exposed waterway environment creates a different breakdown scenario than a petrol craft running out of fuel. Emergency towing cover is particularly relevant for electric craft owners, as the battery management system on a depleted or damaged battery may mean the craft cannot be operated at all until assessed by a technician rather than simply refuelled.

The specialist marine broker market is the appropriate route for electric PWC cover. Not all underwriters have specific products for electric watercraft, and the wrong policy — structured around assumptions about petrol PWC — may contain gaps or exclusions that are particularly relevant to electric craft. A broker with marine market access can identify underwriters that are actively covering electric PWC and structure a policy appropriate to the specific craft and its value.

Electric watercraft insurance is a developing area, and policy terms and premium levels will continue to evolve as underwriters gain more experience with this category. For buyers considering an electric craft, getting an insurance quote before completing a purchase is a sensible step — understanding the cost and terms of cover is part of the total cost of ownership picture.
